Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Clippers at Miami Heat

The Miami Heat don’t have much in their backcourt besides Dwyane Wade but the cupboard is even more bare since Rafer Alston jumped ship.

Carlos Arroyo is manning the point and he’s taking the job seriously. Arroyo has got in the face of some teammates (read Michael Beasley) for not being in the right place offensively.

Beasley doesn’t mind Arroyo aggressive temperament though.

"There's no egos right now on this team," he told the Florida Sun-Sentinel. "With Carlos as the point guard, we understand that when I come back and get the ball, that he's going to get shots, as well, that a lot of guys are going to get shots.”

Beasley scored 22 points on Saturday, just as many as he totaled over his prior three games. Seems like he’s on the same page with Arroyo.

All you need to know about the Clippers is that Drew Gooden is their most productive player right now.

Pick: Heat

New York Knicks at San Antonio Spurs (-8.5, 207)

If there’s one good thing for the Spurs about Tony Parker’s broken hand it’s that Manu Ginobili will get more touches. Ginobili, who’s been in a funk for most of the season, nearly willed San Antonio to a win over the LeBron James-less Cavs on Monday.

“Manu Ginobili is a bad boy,” Cavs coach Mike Brown told San Antonio Express-News after the game.

The Argentinean scored 38 points dished out five assists and pulled down seven rebounds.

Without Parker running the show, the Spurs don’t push the tempo as much and usually get fewer points in the paint.

The Knicks still love to run ‘n’ gun but Mike D’Antoni is putting out a different starting five almost every game.

Pick: Under

Tips and Trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma Sooners vs. Oklahoma St Cowboys [ESPN360 | 7:00 PM ET]

Sooners: Oklahoma enters the Big 12 tournament reeling, as they are quite simply in terrible form. Oklahoma has lost their past 8 games SU, the longest streak in the past 41 years of Sooners basketball. Oklahoma is only 13-17 SU this season, and will finish the season with a losing record for the 1st time in 29 years. Coach Jeff Capel is having to answer alot of questions about his job security, yet he is taking full responsibility for the team. A huge reason why Oklahoma was unsuccessful this season was their play away from home. The Sooners were only 2-13 SU and 5-10 ATS on the road this season. Oklahoma was 6-9 ATS this season as the listed underdog. Oklahoma closed the regular season being listed as the underdog in each of their last 7 games. 2 of the top 4 scorers for Oklahoma are out, so much of the burden falls on G Tommy Mason-Griffin. He is the current Sooners leader in both PPG and APG, averaging 13.9 PPG and 4.8 APG. The Sooners split the season series with the Cowboys, yet allowed 97 PTS in their latest matchup in defeat.

Sooners are 3-9 ATS last 12 games overall.
Over is 5-0 last 5 games following a double digit loss at home.

Key Injuries - G Willie Warren (ankle) is out.
F Tiny Gallon (suspension) is doubtful.

PROJECTED SCORE: 65

Cowboys (-7, O/U 143.5): Oklahoma St. enters the Big 12 conference tournament as the 7th seed thanks to a 9-7 SU league record. The Cowboys have beaten both Kansas and Kansas St. SU this season, as they've proven that when they are hot they can beat anybody in the nation. Overall, Oklahoma St. finished the regular season at 21-9 SU and 14-9-1 ATS. The Cowboys were 6-8 both SU and ATS away from home this season. Since Thanksgiving, Oklahoma St. has had the exact same result both SU and ATS this season. Oklahoma St. was 9-1 ATS as a single digit favorite this season. The Cowboys have put up some big offensive totals this season, but have been held to 74 PTS or fewer in 3 of their past 4 games. Star G James Anderson has done his part however, as he led the Big 12 in scoring this season with 22.9 PPG. Anderson had 17 games where he scored at least 25 PTS this season.

Cowboys are 4-0 ATS last 4 games vs. a team with a losing SU record.
Under is 6-1 last 7 neutral site games.

Key Injuries - G Ray Penn (leg) is out.
F Teeng Akol (wrist) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 81 (SIDE of the Day)

Washington St Cougars vs. Oregon Ducks [FSN | 11:10 PM ET]

Cougars (-1, O/U 133.5): Washington St. is certainly not in their finest form, as they've lost 6 of their past 7 games SU entering the Pac 10 conference tournament. Washington St. has lost both games against Oregon this year by a total of 10 PTS. The Cougars would like nothing more than to get their revenge when the stakes are highest. The biggest reason why the Cougars only went 6-12 SU in conference play was their shooting. The Cougars shot less than 30% from behind the arc in Pac-10 play. Washington St. finished the regular season with a record of 16-14 SU. In all likelyhood, the Cougars will be playing in either the NIT or another postseason tournament not named the NCAA Tournament. After starting the season 10-2 SU, the Cougars were 6-12 SU since Christmas. The Cougars were only 3-9 SU and 5-7 ATS in true road games this season. Luckily, the Cougars were 4-0 SU and 2-2 ATS in neutral court settings this season. G Klay Thompson is literally the entire offense for Washington St, as he averages a team high 19.6 PPG. Thompson attempts nearly 16 shots per game this season, shooting only 41% from the field this season.

Cougars are 1-5 ATS last 6 vs. Pacific 10 conference.
Over is 4-0 last 4 neutral site games.

Key Injuries - F Charlie Enquist (ankle) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 71

Ducks: Don't look now, but Oregon enters the conference tournament with a bit of momentum. Oregon has won 3 of their past 4 games SU, and are facing an opponent they've had success against this season. Optimism is rather high for a team that finished the regular season at 15-15 SU. Oregon was 4-7 SU and 5-6 ATS on the road this season. This will be the 1st game this entire season that the Ducks will be playing on a neutral floor. Oregon enters the conference tournament as the #8 seed, thanks to a 7-11 SU record. Coach Ernie Kent is battling rumors that he has already been fired, but he believes the Ducks have 1 more run in them before his personal future is decided. Oregon was 6-8 ATS as the listed underdog this season, and will have to improve those numbers if they are to indeed make a splash over the next 4 days. Senior G Tajuan Porter will likely have to carry this Ducks team, as he has the athleticism and experience necessary for such a task. Porter is one of only 2 Ducks averaging double digits in PTS, averaging a team high 11.9 PPG this season. Porter has found his offensive stroke of late, as he's averaging nearly 19 PPG over his past 4 games.

Ducks are 1-6 ATS last 7 neutral site games.
Over is 10-3 last 13 games following a SU win.

Key Injuries - G Nicholas Fearn (stomach) is out.
F Joevan Catron (back) is doubtful.

PROJECTED SCORE: 72 (OVER - Total of the Day)

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Kings at Chicago Blackhawks (-177, 5.5)

The Blackhawks were handed a rude awakening by division rival Detroit Sunday. The Red Wings proved to the young Chicago roster that they still run the Central with a 5-4 win.

That game marked the seventh straight game in which the Blackhawks have played over the total. Chicago has averaged more than 4.5 goals during this stretch. And more notable, it has given up an average of almost four goals a night in that same span. Detroit scored all five of their goals in the middle frame of Sunday’s game.

"We seem to let down in the second period, and it's been happening way too much lately," winger Andrew Ladd told the Daily Herald. "It's something we've got to figure out in this room or we're not going to go as far as we want to. We've got to play for 60 minutes instead of in bits and pieces."

It seems the entire club is focusing on playing better defense and putting themselves between the puck and their goaltenders. With Chicago tightening up on the blueline, goals could be tougher to come by Wednesday night.

Pick: Under

Dallas Stars at Buffalo Sabres (-193, 5.5)

If American sports fans didn’t know who Ryan Miller was before the Olympics, they know now. The Team USA goaltender, who claimed the tournament MVP at the Vancouver 2010 games, is back on NHL ice and maintaining his high level of play.

Miller was on the Today Show while in New York earlier this week. Buffalo edged the Rangers 2-1 in overtime while Miller stopped 35 shots.

"It felt amazing, usually you go to opposing rinks and hear a lot of boos," Miller told the Today Show. "Hopefully we built some hockey fans."

Miller has made fans out of NHL bettors. He has allowed two or less goals in his past four starts, winning three of those contests. Under bettors are thrilled that Miller has avoided an Olympic hangover like some players, keeping scores below the betting total in all four of those outings.

Pick: Under

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pucking the trends: Bruins are underwhelming
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unders Bruin

Currently occupying the final playoff spot in the East, the Boston Bruins will be without offensive leader Marc Savard indefinitely. Savard sustained a concussion after being hit by Pittsburgh’s Matt Cooke.

“I think it’s the whole team that really has to step up their game. We’re going to have to play desperate hockey from here on in,” Boston coach Claude Julien told the Boston Globe.

Boston is in the middle of a season-long seven-game road trip.

The Bruins are last in the NHL in goals scored, averaging 2.31 goals a game. They have an over/under record of 22-37-5 and have gone over the total just once in their last 13 games (1-7-5 over/under).

Huet’s Hawks?

The Chicago Blackhawks are second in the NHL in goals scored (3.22 per game), third in the NHL in goals allowed (2.4 per game) and lead the Central division.

Despite Chicago’s success, a goaltending controversy has emerged between incumbent Cristobal Huet and rookie Antti Niemi.

Huet is 26-12-4 with a 2.38 goals against average and four shutouts. Niemi is 17-5-1 with a 2.25 goals against average and four shutouts. Niemi has the edge in save percentage (.909 vs. .898).

According to David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune, because Huet is a veteran and has playoff experience, he gives the Blackhawks the best chance to win in the playoffs.

Chicago has gone over the total seven games in a row and has allowed at least three goals in six of those games.

Cane they make the playoffs?

Yes, they are eight points out of a playoff spot with 17 games left. And yes, Justin Peters and Manny Legace make up Carolina’s goaltending duo. Still, the Carolina Hurricanes still have an outside chance to make the playoffs.

After a 5-17-5 start to the season, Carolina has won eight of nine and twelve of fifteen to climb to 27-31-7. The Canes have three games in hand on seventh place Montreal and the eighth place Bruins are playing without Marc Savard.

“We've just got to keep winning. We're getting closer and closer," Canes forward Brandon Sutter told the Carolina News-Observer.

Carolina is +50,000 to win the Stanley Cup at Bodog.com.

Edmonton Sp-Oilers

Edmonton has been out of contention since a 1-18-2 stretch that lasted half of December and all of January.

Oddsmakers have not been respecting the Oilers. Edmonton has not been favored since they were -106 against the Predators on January 12. Recently, the Oilers were +163 at home to the 13th-place Minnesota Wild and +205 to the New Jersey Devils.

That hasn’t stopped Edmonton from playing the role of spoiler. The Oilers defeated Minnesota and New Jersey and have won four of five in front of their home crowd.

"It's a fun team to play for. You know you're not going to make the playoffs so these are your playoffs and try to be a spoiler and that's what's fun about right now," newly acquired defenseman Ryan Whitney told reporters.

On the schedule

Wed. March 10 – Vancouver Canucks at Phoenix Coyotes

The Canucks end their 14-game road trip with their third road game in four nights (sixth in nine days) against a Coyotes team that will have not played since a Saturday home game.

Fri. March 12 – Tampa Bay Lightning at Washington Capitals

The Lightning, four points out of a playoff spot, play in Montreal Tuesday and Toronto Thursday before challenging the Washington Capitals and their 25-3-4 home record.

Sun. March 14 - Nashville Predators at Los Angeles Kings

After a Tuesday date with the Thrashers, the Preds play San Jose Thursday, Anaheim Friday and close out the week with a Sunday matinee against the Kings.

Daily Sports Roundup

Wednesday, March 10

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Blackhawks play host to the Kings, the Mavs get a visit from the Nets, and the Big 12 tournament begins in Kansas City.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has nine games on tap for Wednesday, with Charlotte at Philadelphia, Memphis at Boston, Utah at Detroit, the Clippers at Miami, Denver at Minnesota, New Orleans at Oklahoma City, Toronto at Sacramento, New York at San Antonio, and New Jersey at Dallas. The Nets (7-56 SU, 24-37-2 ATS) grabbed a rare win on Saturday over New York, but they picked up their 56th loss of the year on Monday in Memphis (107-101). The Mavericks (44-21 SU, 28-36-1 ATS) won their 12th game in a row on Monday, beating the T-Wolves 125-112 in Minnesota. Shawn Marion had 29 points to go along with 14 boards in the victory.

As well, the Big East Tournament continues Wednesday, while the Conference USA, Mountain West, Pacific-10, and Big 12 tourneys get underway. The four Big 12 matchups at Kansas City's Sprint Center on Wednesday are Texas Tech vs. Colorado, Nebraska vs. Missouri, Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State, and Iowa State vs. Texas. The Longhorns (23-8 SU, 11-16 ATS) lost 92-77 to Baylor in their regular-season finale on Saturday, but they beat Iowa State 90-83 on the road when the two teams met on January 13. The Cyclones (15-16 SU, 15-13 ATS) beat Kansas State 85-82 in OT last game, getting 19 points from Craig Brackins.

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are five games on the National Hockey League's schedule for Wednesday, with Dallas at Buffalo, the Rangers at New Jersey, Carolina at Washington, Vancouver at Phoenix, and Los Angeles at Chicago. The 39-22-4 Kings rolled to a 6-0 win over Columbus in their last game on Monday, with Jon Quick having to make just 11 saves. Alexander Frolov turned in a four-point effort. The 43-17-5 Blackhawks are coming off a 5-4 loss to Detroit on Sunday afternoon, with Cristobal Huet giving up four goals on 17 shots before getting pulled. Andrew Ladd had a hat trick in the loss, and Duncan Keith had two points.

Bettor's best friend: Wednesday's wagering tips

Lines off the board

L.A. Clippers at Miami Heat – Clippers and Heat both played on Tuesday night. Baron Davis (illness) is dealing with stomach problems and played on Tuesday but did not start. Eric Gordon (leg) missed the Clips’ last game and was questionable for Tuesday but did not play.

New Orleans Hornets at Oklahoma City Thunder – Peja Stojakovic (groin) left Monday’s game and is questionable.

Memphis Grizzlies at Boston Celtics – Zach Randolph (back) missed his first game of the season on Monday and is probable.

Vancouver Canucks at Phoenix Coyotes – Robert Lang (lower body) missed the team’s last game and is doubtful.

Lines to keep an eye on

The Nets-Mavericks total has jumped from an opener of 203 to 204. The last four games in this series have gone over.

The total in the Raptors-Kings matchup moved from its opener of 211 to 212 at most shops.

Who’s hot

South Florida has won four straight games, going 3-0-1 ATS during that stretch.

Carolina has won eight of its last 10 games with six of those victories coming as underdogs.

The Nets are 3-0 ATS in their last three games!

Who’s not

New Orleans is 1-4 SU and 0-4-1 ATS in its last five games.

In three starts since the Olympic break, Martin Brodeur is 1-2 with a 3.36 GAA and .864 save percentage.

Texas Tech has dropped seven straight games, going 2-5 ATS during the losing streak.

Key stat

6-0 – Spurs record when Richard Jefferson scores 20 or more points. They are 4-1-1 ATS in that situation as well. It is surprising to see that Jefferson has only scored 20+ six times all season and three of those performances came in the first seven games. Jefferson had eight points the last time San Antonio played the Knicks.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Mavericks’ center Brendan Haywood has been sidelined with a bad back for the last two games and “might” return to action on Wednesday versus the Nets. Dallas hasn’t skipped a beat without a frontcourt, going small-ball on opponents, with its 12-game winning streak still intact. Rodrique Beaubois has started the last two games for the Mavs and has contributed 35 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists during that span.

Notable quotable

"I have great respect for the NIT, always have. It's always a good time to make sure you look at your team, see what they have. I want to make sure if there's a step back on the court to play a basketball game that they would be able to bring emotion, energy and all the things you should bring to competition."

-- Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun said in regards to playing in the National Invitational Tournament after the Huskies lost to St. John’s, 73-51, in the first round of the Big East tournament.

Tips and notes

- The aging Spurs will be playing their fourth game in the span of six days on Wednesday. San Antonio returned from a two-game road trip (where the plane to Memphis was delayed) on the heels of a tough, two-point loss to Cleveland on Monday and will now have to run and gun with the Knicks up-tempo offense without the services of Tony Parker.

- Kentucky head coach John Calipari has made it clear that winning the SEC tournament means “nothing” to him or his team. He stated that all they were concerned with was their seeding in the NCAA tournament and that is almost certainly going to be No. 1 no matter what happens this week. The conference tourney is being held in Nashville and Vanderbilt is anywhere from +300 to +550 odds to win it in their home town.

- Something the Rangers have changed in strategy has resulted in lower-scoring games, but not wins. Coach John Tortorella said his team’s new approach is “doing the right thing away from the puck” and “have it more.” Perhaps a game of keep away is what New York is experimenting with. The last two Rangers games have gone under.

Wednesday six-pack

According to Baseball America, six of the best minor league prospects for the Los Angeles Dodgers.......

8) Ivan DeJesus Jr, SS-- .295 hitter in 432 minor league games; son of former big league SS; broke his leg last year, only played four games.

7) Andrew Lambo, OF-- 21-year could be back in AA for third year; it isn't clear whether his future is in OF or at first base.

6) Scott Elbert, LHP-- Brought up to bigs last two years, his future is probably as situational reliever. Allowed 19 runs in 26 IP in majors.

4) Josh Lindblom, P-- Purdue alum was reliever there,
could be groomed as future closer for LA, but has started 23 minor league games.

3) Aaron Miller, LHP-- Baylor alum played OF and pitched in college; was 3-1, 2.75 in 10 starts LY, his first professional season.

1) Dee Gordon, SS-- Flash Gordon's son hit .311 in his first two years in minor leagues; is still raw, could be starting in majors by 2012.

************************************************

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

13) Championship Week is all about the mid-majors, teams like Wofford, whose win Monday night was the greatest moment in school's history, at least sports-wise. Its so much fun to watch these teams celebrate after it wins a championship. Wofford could give someone a headache next week.

12) Atlantic 14 changed its tournament format this year, playing its first round game at campus sites Tuesday, then moving to Atlantic City for three rounds from Friday-Sunday. More leagues in the east should think about playing their conference tournaments in AC or at Mohegan Sun.

11) Fitting end to Providence's season; they scored 106 points, and lost.

10) How about Georgia Tech's draw in ACC tournament? As the 7-seed, you figure they beat the 10-seed in first round, but that 10-seed turns out to be North Carolina, who Tech already beat twice this year. Tough draw for Paul Hewitt, whose job at Tech may be in danger-- if they stupidly fire Hewitt, he'll have another job within an hour, if he wants it.

9) I like Oakland's uniforms, with names underneath the number on back of the uniform, the way the Sacramento Kings used to have it. Oakland is in Michigan by the way, and the Summit League ain't half bad.

8) Jackson State went 17-1 in SWAC this year, is favorite to win tourney this weekend, but Tigers started this season 0-10, including a 71-62 loss to a terrible Wagner team. SWAC is worst league with an automatic bid.

7) UConn's 73-51 loss to St John's Tuesday was awful- playing poorly isn't the same as lack of effort, but Huskies hit the exacta in this game. It wouldn't be right for Jim Calhoun's career to end with a hideous effort like this on a Tuesday afternoon, but we'll see what happens.

6) Former NBA star Mark Aguirre would be a candidate to be the coach at DePaul but he isn't a college graduate, which apparently is a roadblock, especially since Aguirre went to college at DePaul.

5) When Wake Forest beat Clemson Sunday, it moved Florida State into getting a first-round bye and pushed Tigers down to first-round game vs NC State Thursday. Wake's win helped FSU more than it helped Wake.

4) Bigtime coaching mismatch Wednesday in Big 12: Former NBA coach Jeff Bzdelik against professional son Pat Knight; Bzdelik's Colorado club whacked Texas Tech 101-90 in Boulder five days ago.

3) Sam Saunders finished T17 at Honda Classic last week, which doesn't mean much until you realize he is Arnold Palmer's grandson. Pretty cool.

2) Eagles want a 2nd-round draft pick for Michael Vick? Good luck.

1) Thursday is the best full day of the college basketball season; Friday night is the best single night, with ton of semifinal games. Should be a fun weekend, as we get ready for the NCAA tournament, and someone's trip to America's favorite city to take it all in.

Len's Top 5

Happy Wednesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for March 10, 2010 from Len Berman.

1. Quick Hits

Tiger Woods is working with his swing coach. That probably signals his return to golf in the near future.
The Mets got what they hope is good medical news. It looks like Jose Reyes has a treatable overactive thyroid.
Two time world champion, Dodgers centerfielder Willie Davis is dead at the age of 69.
Disgraced sprinter. 34-year old Marion Jones is joining the Tulsa Shock in the WNBA.
Rikers Island announces the first ever "Pinstripe Bowl" in December. No wait. It's the Yankees.
Every human competitor in the Iditarod race will be tested for drugs. The dogs are free to ingest whatever they want.

2. A-t Ease

OK, I know you're sick of hearing about A-Rod, but the story isn't going away. Alex Rodriguez said yesterday he is "at ease" in his relationship with a Canadian doctor who is under investigation in two countries. But if everything is kosher, how come the Yankees didn't know that Rodriguez saw the doctor? And why didn't A-Rod's hip surgeon know either? It strains credulity to think that everything is on the up and up. And we thought A-Rod would be all about baseball after last season.

3. Head Cases

Interesting how blows to the head have become the hot button issue in sports. It's a major talking point in the NFL. And now it's spreading. The NHL is considering the banning of some blows to the head. Why not all blows as some hockey leagues have done? The NHL allows shoulder hits to the head and is considering a ban on "blind side" shoulder hits. In other words, if a player sees it coming, it's OK if he gets his brain scrambled.

4. The Sound Of One Hand Clapping

If you only have one leg, how come you have to buy a pair of sneakers? That's the question Phil Moore couldn't get answered in Britain. So, fed up with buying a pair and throwing one away, he stole a Nike trainer from a sporting goods store. But you have another problem when you only have one leg. It's hard to make a fast getaway. He quickly got caught and was fined for his transgression.

5. Lets Go Mets

The Mets slogan this season is "We Believe in Comebacks." Subscriber Jared G. thinks he has some better ideas:
5. Thyroid, Shmyroid
4. The Yankees Don't Have Shake Shack!
3. The 2010 Mets: We Promise We Don't Suck as Bad As Last Year
2. The 2010 Mets:  Healthy since March, 2010 (except for a few injuries and endocrine problems)
And the number one slogan the Mets should have considered:
1.  Hey, at Least We're Not Owned By The Dolans!
Damn, I hate it when my subscribers are more clever than I.

Happy Birthday: Gymnast Shannon Miller. 33.
Bonus Birthday: Basic Instinct actress Sharon Stone. 52.

Today in Sports: A sign of things to come. Pete Rose makes his debut in spring training and gets hits his first two times up. 1963.
Bonus Event: Alexander Graham Bell utters the first words over a telephone, "Mr. Watson, come here, I want you." 1876.
