Washington Wizards at Atlanta Hawks (-6.5, 203)

“Agent Zero is back” was the headline to Washington’s season-opening win over the Dallas Mavericks, but bettors shouldn’t ignore the other story from the game: the Wizards have some ballers.

When Gilbert Arenas was last healthy, Washington was a team that lived and died with the production of its Big Three (Antawn Jamison, Caron Butler and Arenas). But the Wiz now boast a roster full of players capable filling the basket.

“We’ve got balance now. We’ve got a good team. You can’t load up on anybody anymore. That’s a beautiful thing,” Butler told the Washington Times.

Butler is speaking the truth. Washington backers know the club wouldn’t win too many games with Butler shooting 6-for-17 from the field and Jamison out of the lineup.

But Andray Blatche chipped in with 20 points and seven rebounds off the bench, replacing what Washington would normally get from Jamison. Coach Flip Saunders can also turn to Randy Foye and Mike Miller for double-digit point production.

Sacramento Kings at New Orleans Hornets (-11.5, 198.5)

Tyreke Evans didn’t do much to dispel his critics who said he couldn't play the point in the NBA. The Kings first-round draft pick looked lost for most of his pro debut, unsure when to shoot and when to look for his teammates.

The former Memphis star finished with more turnovers (three) than assists (two) and didn’t enjoy a good shooting day either (5 for 16).

“He’s not used to having guys around him who can make plays and to help shoulder the load,” Kings center Spencer Hawes told the Sacramento Bee.

Translation: “Hey rook, pass the damn ball!”

Evans should watch his Friday counterpart closely. Hornets point guard Chris Paul will demonstrate the proper way to spread the rock around.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Columbus Blue Jackets (+108, 5.5)

Looks like the defending champs are going to have to fight through another big injury. News broke Thursday afternoon that All-Star forward Evgeni Malkin will miss the next two weeks because of a shoulder strain.

This puts Pittsburgh down two of its best players. Defenseman Sergi Gonchar is already on the shelf with a wrist injury.

Of course it’s not like Pittsburgh is starless. Captain Sidney Crosby reminded NHL fans just how dominant he can be after notching a hat trick against the Habs Wednesday night.

Columbus, with the advantage of the last change, will send out its checking line every time Crosby touches the ice. Look for the Jackets to have an easier time containing Pittsburgh’s offensive attack on Friday.

Colorado Avalanche at San Jose Sharks (-177, 5.5)

The Avs have a league-high 22 points and have won eight of their last nine games, six of which were on the road. Despite their blazing hot start, bookmakers aren’t moving their odds dramatically. Colorado has been an underdog in all but one of its games this season.

Of course, there are good reasons no one saw this kind of streak coming from the Avalanche. They finished at the bottom of the standings last season and didn’t make any waves with free agent signings in the offseason.

They’re getting the job done with overachieving youngsters and a goalie standing on his head.

Craig Anderson is making the most of his first chance to be a starting goalie in the NHL. He’s already registered two shutouts for the Avs and is at the top of the league in goals against average (1.97) and save percentage (.940).

“He’s giving everyone here confidence,” Colorado defenseman Kyle Quincey told the Denver Post. “You know if you make the odd mistake, he’s there to back you up. He’s playing unbelievable.”

Edmonton trailed at half in nine of last ten games. Argonauts lost 12 games in row, but are 3-3 vs spread in last six- they're 3-4 vs spread on road- both their wins came away from the Rogers Centre. Four of last five Edmonton games stayed under the total, as did five of Toronto's last seven.


Saturday, October 31

Saskatchewan (9-6-1) @ Hamilton (8-8)-- TiCats snapped a four-game skid last week in Toronto; they lost last two home games, allowing 80 points, after winning five of first six at home. Roughriders are 3-1-1 last five games; they beat Hamilton 33-25 (-5) back in Week 7, outrushing TiCats 214-31. Riders are 4-3-1 on road, with last three decided by total of six points-- five of their last six overall were decided by four points or less. Five of last seven Hamilton games stayed under the total.

Calgary (9-6-1) @ BCLions (8-8)-- Lions lost twice to Calgary this year, 48-10/27-18, running ball for 219-208 yards; they've covered last four games (3-1 SU), won four of last five home games, winning by 15-7-6-3 points. BC covered six of its last seven as an underdog. Stampeders are 6-2-1 in last nine games; they're 1-6 vs spread on road (3-4 SU). Under is 10-3 in Lions' last 13 games, 5-1 in Calgary's last six. Toronto Argonauts at Edmonton Eskimos (-7, 49.5)

Argonauts fans must feel like they are stuck in Groundhog Day, but without any trace of Bill Murray to make them laugh. The defense tries to keep it close at each game but the attack goes nowhere and the special units are pretty much invisible. Plagued by injuries in the last few weeks, the Eskimos D, the worst in the league, will breathe a little against the worst offensive attack. Even more so since head coach Bart Andrus might give the ball to rookie QB Stephen Reaves, a 24-year-old left-hander out of Southern Mississippi, to rest his No. 1 Kerry Joseph.

Opposing QB Ricky Ray, although leading CFL passers, has not been a shadow of himself since Kevin Strasser replaced Rick Worman as offensive coordinator and that could be a problem against one of the best defense in the league. The Eskimos are in a must-win situation to keep any hope of getting out of the West Division cellar and any chance they may still have of making the playoffs. Of course to achieve that they will also have to beat the Lions next week in Vancouver. The job of GM Danny Maciocia, whose team won’t host a playoff game in Edmonton for a fifth year in a row, may depend on it.

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Hamilton Tiger Cats (-1, 55)

The Tiger Cats have greatly improved since last year and are always tough to beat in front of their home fans in Hamilton where they have a 5-3 record. In their last two games, the OL didn’t give a single sack and the team committed only one turnover. Slowing down DE’s as aggressive as the Riders Stevie Baggs and John Chick might present a quite different challenge. These two are challenging each other for the lead in sacks this season. Baggs shares the lead with Lions Ricky Foley with 11 while Chick already made 10 sacks. This is almost enough to overlook the losses of two of the best Riders defensive players, halfbacks Eddie Davis (knee) and Lance Frazier (dehydration).

The Tiger Cats could have had a much better record since four of their nine losses ended with a margin of three points or less. But they are only 1-9 this season against teams with winning records. Tough luck because the Roughriders, who share the provisional first place in the West with the Calgary Stampeders, didn’t suffer a loss in their last three games and each time, they have put at least 32 points on the board. A win in Hamilton before squaring with Calgary in the regular-season finale for the pennant, would give the Roughriders a serious option on a title that eluded them since 1976 and that confers the privilege of hosting the western final. To achieve this, QB Darian Durant must avoid turning over the ball. He has already been picked 20 times this season.

Calgary Stampeders at B.C. Lions (+1.5, 53)

In the heat of a championship race the Stampeders can’t afford to lose against a Lions team they have beaten six times in a row. In the last two games, Henry Burris has been back at the top of his game, showing the stuff he did when he led Calgary to the last Grey Cup. Last time the Stampeders played the Lions, RB Joffrey Reynolds had fun at the expenses of the opposing front seven rushing for 151 yards. In two games against the Lions, Reynolds averaged 141 rushing yards per game.

Casey Printers is back, after 10 months of inactivity and both the Lions’ uniform and playbook suit him quite well. Last week, in a 33-30 loss to the Roughriders, Printers passed for more than 300 yards - not bad for someone who hadn’t played since November 2008. Of course, he can count on two of the best receivers in the CFL in Geroy Simon and Paris Jackson. Simon caught six passes from Printers last week for 142 yards. The Lions, who had more than their share of injuries (Only 40 percent of the team is considered healthy), have little chance of finishing in first place but they can hope to host the Western Division semifinal and that should be more than enough to give this team some extra motivation.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Montreal Alouettes (-7)

The Blue Bombers are coming to Montreal fired up after inflicting the Alouettes with a rare 41-24 loss - the Birds’ only loss to an East Division rival this year. It was a fourth win in five games for Winnipeg, which can now challenge for second place in the East and therefore host the division’s semifinal. The Blue Bombers will play their last regular season game at home against the Hamilton Tiger Cats. WR Adarius Bowman, who lost consciousness after violently hitting the ground while trying to catch a pass, is considered doubtful for this rematch. Without their star QB Anthony Calvillo and top defensive players like Davis Sanchez, Shea Emry and Diamond Ferri, the Alouettes where outplayed last Saturday in Winnipeg. Could it be that the coaching staff of both the Tiger Cats and the Bombers found some weaknesses in Montreal’s armor?

In the Alouettes’ locker room, the defensive squad swears they will finish the season strong and make people forget these two bad performances. Sanchez, Emry and Ferri will be back in the lineup but the Als will be without excellent DT Eric Wilson (knee) and their possible Defensive Rookie of the Year candidate Jerald Brown (groin), both of them possibly not returning before the East Final on November 22. But since Anthony Calvillo will also be back in action, the Bombers might find it quite difficult to repeat last week’s feat.

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The T-Wolves host the Cavaliers, the Mavs battle the Lakers, and ranked West Virginia looks for a win against South Florida.

Colliding on the gridiron . . .

No. 20 West Virginia is at South Florida on Friday night in the lone college football game on the schedule. The Mountaineers (6-1 SU, 2-4 ATS) are coming off a 28-24 win over Connecticut in their last contest, with Noel Devine rushing for 178 yards and a touchdown in the victory. The Bulls (5-2 SU, 2-3 ATS) were embarrassed 41-14 by Pittsburgh last time out. Oddsmakers have West Virginia pegged as the 3-point road favorite for Friday, with the game's total at 48 points.

As well, there's one Canadian Football League game on tap for Friday, with Toronto (3-13 SU, 6-9-1 ATS) at Edmonton (7-9 SU, 5-11 ATS). The oddsmakers have the Eskimos listed as 7.5-point home favorites, with the total at 49.5 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

A busy night around the NBA on Friday sees 13 games on the schedule, including Cleveland at Minnesota. LeBron James and the Cavaliers are off to an 0-2 start to the season, dropping their opener to Boston and then falling to Toronto 101-92 on Wednesday night. James scored 23 points against the Raptors. The Timberwolves began their campaign with a 95-93 win over the Nets on Wednesday. Jonny Flynn had a team-high 18 points for Minnesota that game.

Also on the Friday schedule: New York at Charlotte, Milwaukee at Philadelphia, Washington at Atlanta, Oklahoma City at Detroit, Toronto at Memphis, Chicago at Boston, Orlando at New Jersey, Sacramento at New Orleans, Miami at Indiana, the Clippers at Utah, Golden State at Phoenix, and Dallas at the Lakers. The Mavericks were beaten 102-91 by the Wizards in their opener on Tuesday, while Kobe Bryant and company topped the Clippers 99-92 in their first contest.

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are 10 games on the NHL's schedule for Friday night, including Toronto at Buffalo. The Maple Leafs (1-7-2) were tagged with yet another loss last time out, falling 4-3 in overtime to the Stars on Wednesday night. Jonas Gustavsson stopped 32 of 36 Dallas shots in that contest. The Sabres (7-1-1) rolled to a 4-1 win over the Devils in their last game on Wednesday, with Ryan Miller making 31 saves and Clarke MacArthur scoring his fifth goal of the season.

Also on the ice on Friday: the Islanders at Washington, Pittsburgh at Columbus, the Rangers at Minnesota, Montreal at Chicago, Florida at Dallas, Vancouver at Anaheim, and Colorado at San Jose. The Avalanche (10-1-2) continued their torrid start with a 3-2 win over Calgary on Wednesday night, with Craig Anderson making 30 stops. The Sharks (8-4-1) won their third straight on Wednesday, topping the Kings 2-1 in a shootout. Patrick Marleau had his 10th goal of the year.

On October 30 in Baseball History...

1911 - Clark Griffith is named manager at Washington, beginning a stand in the nation's capitol as manager, then owner, that will last until his death in 1955.

1945 - Branch Rickey signs Jackie Robinson to a contract with Montreal of the International League for 1946. Black pitcher John Wright also signs.

1956 - The Dodgers sell Ebbets Field to a real estate group. They agree to stay until 1959, with an option to stay until 1961.

1963 - Sandy Koufax wins again. The Dodgers southpaw, who won 25 games and pitched 11 shutouts, outpolls Cardinals shortstop Dick Groat 237 to 190 for the NL MVP award.

1967 - Arthur Allyn announces that his White Sox will play nine games in Milwaukee in 1968. Chicago will become the first AL team to play regular season games outside its own city since 1905.

1974 - Catfish Hunter is named the AL Cy Young Award winner. He led the league with 25 wins and a 2.49 ERA.

-- Last time Phillies played Bronx in World Series, in 1950, it ended October 7; baseball playoffs started on October 7 this season.

-- Mets fans I know are divided about who they're rooting for in the World Series. The more sensible ones are rooting for the Phillies.

-- Earlier this week. tickets for Viking-Packer game at Lambeau Field were going for as much as $1,400 a pop. Favre-nomics, I guess.

-- Georgia Tech won its last three games, scoring 37 ppg; the combined passing stats for Tech in those three games: 9-23/267 yards.

-- Favorite is 6-0 vs spread in Louisiana Tech's '09 football games.

-- Have NBA package for free until Tuesday; forgot how much I like watching Warrior home games and seeing Steve Nash playing for the Suns. Will I buy the NBA package? That's a question for next week.

Friday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend.....

13) I'm off to the hallowed halls of the Ivy League Saturday morning, to see the Penn-Brown football game in Providence; buddy of mine is one of Brown's assistant coaches. Forecast of temps near 70 is sweet.

12) Texas is away from Austin for third Saturday in a row. Oklahoma State is a dangerous underdog in Stillwater Saturday night.

11) Can Temple win its sixth game in row and become bowl eligible? Can Duke win its third ACC game in a row? Can Idaho get win #7?

10) 6-2 Idaho is favored for second time in nine games over Louisiana Tech team; favorite is 6-0 vs spread in Tech's games this season.

9) Georgia's schedule was stupid-hard this year; will they give Florida a tough game after finally getting a bye? Gators waxed them 49-10 LY.

8) Central Michigan-Boston College will be a good game. Chippewas are no stiffs. Eagles play better at home, but went all out last week in a tight loss at Notre Dame, could let down here.

7) Oregon won its last six games, USC its last four. Trojans are on road for third time in last four weeks. Winner here probably wins Pac-10.

6) In the NFL, how will the 0-6 Titans play coming off a bye after their 59-0 beatdown in Foxboro? Vince Young is starting at QB, making this game even more interesting.

5) You have to have a lot of onions to lay points with 0-6 Titans or 1-5 Detroit this week. Lions' offensive coordinator is Scott Linehan, who was run out of St Louis after a horrendous stint as the Rams' coach.

4) 13 NFL games this week; seven games have spreads of less than four points, the other six games have spreads of nine or more points. Odd slate of games this week, some good rivalries being renewed.

3) 3-3 Ravens are favored over 6-0 Denver, with both teams coming off byes; Broncos had it going so well, not sure they needed a bye, while Ravens lost three in a row before the bye-- they definitely needed it.

2) Brett Favre returns to Lambeau Field Sunday as the enemy; how will the natives react? People in the midwest are normally polite. Normally. There isn't a lot about this game that is normal.

1. Quick Hits

The Yankees win game 2, 3-1 and even the World Series at 1 game apiece.

Today is an off day. The World Series resumes tomorrow night in Philadelphia. 7:57pm ET FOX

Martina Navratilova takes Andre Agassi to task and equates him with Roger Clemens for lying about drug use.

FOX will use a "Favre-cam" to follow Brett Favre's every move in his return to Green Bay on Sunday. Not to be outdone, CBS will employ a "barf-cam" to check out what Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is eating on the sidelines.

 
2. Game 2
 
So what are Yankee fans focusing on today? A.J. Burnett's game winning pitching performance or A-Rod? Human nature being what it is, Yankee fans know that A-Rod has struck out 3 times in each World Series game, but they couldn't tell you how many strikeouts A.J. Burnett recorded last night. (9)  Before the game, Commissioner Bud Selig said he's not in favor of expanding instant replay. And then his umps went out and blew another call. But the biggest headline is that the World Series will go at least 5 games. It hasn't gone 6 in 6 years. Could this be the year for a real "Fall Classic?"
 
3. Sportsmanship
 
A big controversy in France. A mostly Muslim soccer team refused to play a team that welcomes gay soccer players. Of course we know about Iranian athletes who wouldn't compete against Jews. So I guess we gotta change all those baseball cards to include religion and sexual persuasion. Or maybe we just gotta ban the bigots.
 
4. Friday Mailbag
 
As for this World Series being the Mets fan's worst nightmare (the two teams they hate the most,) J.B. pointed out to me on Facebook that "As a diehard Yankee fan, I faced the same dilemma in 1986. (Mets vs Red Sox)"

An animal rights group has forced a town in New Zealand to cancel its annual dead rabbit-throwing contest. They complained it sent the wrong message to kids. The contest is held each year to coincide with the annual pig hunt. Hey killing defenseless animals is fine and dandy. Just don't go tossing 'em around.
